John 9

Outline and Exposition

(2) who sinned :Jews believed that sufferings are from sins of parents or himself.

  • (Numbers 14:18) The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.
  • (Deuteronomy 28:61) Every sickness also and every affliction that is not recorded in the book of this law, the Lord will bring upon you, until you are destroyed.

(3) but that the works of God might be displayed in him: God would be glorified through what happened to the blind, partly because the miracle displays the glory of God, who alone can raise the dead

(4) We: not Jesus only, his disciples share with him, the responsibility of doing what God wants done - great commission (Matthew 28:16-20); that I am doing to you; and you should do too

(5) I am the light of the world: see 8:12

(6) Jesus used variety in his cures. He could turn even the dirt of the earth into a medium of restoration (cf. Mk 8:22-25)

(17) they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him …?”: it is curious that they put such a question to such a person; their doing so reflected their perplexity.

(21) Ask him; he is of age.: because their fear of getting involved; the fear of putting out from their system (v. 22)

(22) put out of the synagogue: the synagogue was the center of Jewish community life, so excommunication cut a person off from many social relationships.

(31)  God does not listen to sinners: the remark of some of the Pharisees (v. 16) (36) sir (38) Lord his change on Jesus

(39) For judgment I came into this world : for non believers those who reject his gift end up “blind”.

For believers: (3:17) For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (12:47) for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world

Topical

Jesus Heals the Blind

Jesus performed more miracles of this kind than of any other. Giving sight to the blind was predicted as a Messianic activity.

  • (Isa 29:18) In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.
  • (Isa 35:5) Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
  • (Isa 42:7) to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,

Thus these miracles were additional evidence that Jesus was the Messiah. (John 20:31) "these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name"

Faith in Progress

From the story of the blind, we can observe how the true faith progress - God's grace (revelation), obedience, being a disciple & persecution, and becoming a worshiper.

  1. The blind man didn't find Jesus but Jesus gave him a sight - God's grace. As a response to grace, he obeyed to Jesus (v. 7).
  2. For understanding of Jesus, first, he called Jesus the man (v. 11) and later a prophet (v. 17) - probably the highest designation the man could think of. And he understood that Jesus is from God (v. 33).
  3. He was counting himself a disciple. (27) Do you also want to become his disciples? Didn’t compromise about Jesus against the fear of Jews (24-33) and as a result he was cast out (34).
  4. He was ready to follow any suggestion from his benefactor (the source of grace) (v. 36) so became a worshipers. (38) He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.. The man gave Jesus the reverence due to God.

The Real Blind

Jesus said, (39) those who see may become blind. The Pharisees’ claim to sight showed their complete unawareness of their spiritual blindness and need. And though they claimed to have sight, their actions were evidence of their blindness. They can’t avoid God’s judgement, because (41) but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

Cf., (Matthew 15:14) “if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
