Study on the Gospel of John Chapter 19
Jews try to crucify Jesus and He is going through wrongful trails. A Roman governor, Pilate tries to easy the situation but he can’t. And during the course, Jesus fulfills OT prophecies, God’s plan of salvation. God’s overruling in the fulfillment of Scripture.
Exposition
(1) Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.: Pilate hoped a flogging would satisfy the Jews and enable him to release Jesus
(2) purple: a color used by loyalty
(7) according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”: Jews’ main charge - blasphemy
(14) day of Preparation of the Passover: Friday of Passover week, sixth hour: about noon
(20) in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek: Aramaic, one of the languages of the Jewish people at that time. Latin, the official language of Rome. Greek, the common language fo communication throughout the empire.
(24) to fulfill the Scripture: Psalm 22, (28) Psalm 69:21, (36) Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12, (37) Zechariah 12:10, (see also) Isaiah 53:5, Zec 12:10)
(30) It is finished: In Greek, Τετέλεσται (Tetelestai), a commercial term “the debt has paid in full”
(38) Joseph of Arimathea: a rich disciple (Mt 27:57), and a member of the Sanhedrin who had not agreed to Jesus’ condemnation (Lk 23:51)
