Discipline of Mind
Discipline of Mind
Study on Chapter 6 of Disciplines of a Godly Man (R. Kent Hughes)
Food for Thought
Secular Drift
(Q) What does a comparison of Harry Blamires’s statement (“The Christian mind has succumbed (골복하다) to the secular drift with a degree of weakness and nervelessness unmatched in Christian history”) and Proverbs 4:23 tell you? Do the things we think about really matter?
(Proverbs 4:23) Keep your heart with all vigilance (경계), for from it flow the springs of life.
(A) Serious. Yes, I think it really matters. What we think defines who we truly are; at least it programs who we are.
Thought Life
(Q) What does Philippians 4:8 say about the thought life? Are we supposed to take Polly-anna(지나친 낙관주의) approach to life and deny the stresses and strains of life? If not, then what is this passage teaching?
(Philippians 4:8) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable (칭찬받을 만한), if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
(A) “A matter of personal choice.” Paul knew the dark side of human experience (Roman 1:28-32). But he chose not to make such input a part of his mental programming.
Blameless
(Q) What do Matthew 5:29 and Psalm 101:2,3 tell us about a discipline of mind? Is it really possible to live out these verses day by day? How?
Matthew 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.
Psalm 101:2,3 I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.
(A) Those verses imply that the discipline of mind is seriously important. Walk with the Holy Spirit; the Word of God, prayers, and Gospel.
The Word of God
(Q) What can the Word of God do to help us in this area (see Psalm 119:97-100)? Are you doing what these verses describe? Why or why not?
Psalm 119:97-100 Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts.
(A) The Word of God should be the answer for the discipline of mind. I try hard on this area, praise God. But definitely need God’s help for the quality.
Reading the Bible Through
(Q) Have you ever read the Bible through in a year (or even two years or three)? Will you covenant with God to do this now, in order to become more familiar with the whole of Scripture and to better hear God’s voice to you through His Word.
(A) I think so; but fragmentary. I am doing now with TBC’s program.
Christian Books
(Q) Name at least three or four Christian books that have made a major impact on your life. Then list at least two Christian books you have been meaning to read. By what date will you read these books?
- Evangelism Explosion
- Pilgrim’s progress
- Twelve ordinary men
Will read:
- The Pursuit of God
- The Imitation of Christ
Applications
Application/Response
What did God speak to you about most specifically, most powerfully in this chapter? Talk to Him about it right now!
Think About It!
In what ways do you know you need greater discipline of mind? What are your greatest struggles in this area - perhaps sexual lust? self-pity? dwelling past pain? pride? worry? other? What can you do, practically and spiritually, to experience growth toward wholeness in these areas?
